About

I’m Michael Stenning, founder of Stenning Roofers—a specialist roofing company based in East Sussex. We provide expert roofing services with a focus on heritage and conservation work, restoring period and listed buildings using traditional materials and methods. Our work is rooted in craftsmanship, care, and a deep respect for the buildings we protect.

I was born and raised in Lewes, where I began my roofing apprenticeship over 20 years ago. I learned my trade on rooftops that had stood for generations—experiences that instilled in me a belief that a roof is more than just shelter; it’s part of a building’s soul. Those early lessons shaped my approach to roofing as a true craft. Today, I lead a small, handpicked team of skilled craftsmen who share that same ethos: take pride in your work, respect the building, and always aim for the highest standard.

We undertake all aspects of roofing, but our reputation is built on sensitive restoration and conservation. We work with slate, clay, lead and traditional materials to repair and restore roofs on historic homes, churches, and listed buildings across Sussex and Kent. Every project is personally overseen by me—from scaffold to final fix—ensuring attention to detail at every stage. We liaise closely with clients, architects, and conservation officers to ensure the work honours the building’s history while meeting modern standards of durability. Discreet, precise, and deeply committed to quality, we believe the best roofs quietly belong, not shout for attention. Whether we’re restoring a Georgian townhouse or a medieval barn, we bring the same level of care, pride, and craftsmanship to every roof.

We’re proud members of The Guild of Master Craftsmen, and our work is regularly vetted to the highest industry standards. If you’re looking for a roofer who values quality, heritage, and quiet precision, I’d be pleased to discuss your project.

We offer a full range of roofing and building services

At Stenning Roofers, we take a comprehensive approach to roofing—combining time-honoured techniques with expertly executed building work, carried out with a deep respect for a building’s form and character.

Our core services include natural slating, hand-laid clay and high-quality contemporary roof tiles. We are also specialist lead workers, using traditional methods to provide decorative lead roof details that provide a beautiful finish to a roof.

Our team is trained in heritage skills and known for meticulous attention to detail—whether restoring chimney stacks, carrying out lime repointing, or crafting bespoke roof carpentry. Every element is approached with care, precision, and pride.

Beyond the roofline, we install heritage roof lights and windows, work with premium flat roofing systems, and complete associated exterior repairs and period-appropriate decoration. Whether restoring a listed home or enhancing a historic property, our work is always rooted in craftsmanship and respect for the past.

Every project is approached with the same care and commitment we’d bring to our own homes—built to honour the past and endure into the future.
